This is Me

I'm Cairo Reid, a 16-year-old Afro-Latino with a curious mind, big heart and even bigger dreams. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, to a Dominican American mother and a Black father. I proudly embrace both my African and Latino heritage by finding a sense of belonging within the multiculturalism of New York City. I am a Student, Athlete, Tech-Savvy, Photographer, Family-oriented and Community-Driven individual passionate about growing and connecting with my community.

Since I was in elementary school I have always felt pulled towards mathematics. However, learning to apply interesting math formulas like the Pythagorean theorem to the real life, fueled my passion for mathematics. I remember using the Pythagorean theorem to find the shortest way home from school. I would think of the term "As the crow flies," which is the straight distance between two points calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. It didn't only make the walk home shorter, but it also made it more fun. While walking a few blocks in an L shape, I always  imagined the crow flying the straighter distance and arriving first.

I have been playing chess since I was nine years old. Playing chess has helped build my critical and problem solving skills. I have learned to apply chess while playing basketball and many other areas. I am an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi League Brooklyn chapter, an organization that provides young men of color with mentoring and growth opportunities. In my high school, I am a member of the Black Student Union where we support empowering the voices of black scholars.
